the list goes on and on

today's title comes from gives you hell by the all-american rejects/glee because it came on my itunes shuffle just now.

so, my first week of classes is almost over. i've actually managed to survive it. i even did laundry! and my roomies and i are now mostly unpacked. we're still figuring out how to organize everything. we're thinking of going to the mall this weekend to pick up a communal bookcase since, as you can see, my desk area is a little cluttered right now:

the mall is fun. there are actually two of them, right across the highway from each other - an indoor mall and an outdoor reston town center-type deal. we went the sunday before class started with michelle, chiara (she's an italian international student with a fancy coffee maker - i took it as a sign that we should be friends), and renata, my neighbors. michelle's the girl from fredericksburg that i mentioned in my last post. freshmen aren't allowed to have cars on campus but she got her parents to drop hers off for the day so she could give us the grand tour/we wouldn't have to take buses. she's got the cutest car - it's a bright yellow beetle. i'm in love with it. oh, and while we were in downtown fredericksburg, i found the cutest vintage thrift shop. it specializes in nothing but audrey hepburn memorabilia. like, it tracks down posters and post cards and replicas of outfits she wore in movies. i probably don't have to tell you this, but i stocked up:

classes started monday. it was pretty easy. i have my biology lectures and lab that day, but it turned out to be a lot of review from high school. i had a lot of sophomore year/s-la flashbacks. oh, and we got to play with tapeworms. that was fun. our tapeworm had spots and cute little goggle eyes when we looked at him through the microscope, so my partner and i decided to name him fred.

i've got three classes in a row on tuesdays and thursdays. two of them are really fun and one of them is stats. my chaucer and his age class is amazing. the professor is just like my ap lit teacher last year, which means everything is automatically funny. today we started out talking about chaucer's life and the various references he makes to religion/history/literature/nature/astrology/your mom and somehow ended up talking about mimes and how she still can't pronounce virginia place names correctly. i'm happy, because it's a 300-level english class and my advisor was all "caution! danger! danger, will robinson." but it's all good.

my other english class is global issues in literature, which is, predictably, depressing. it's also my last class of the day, so we usually go straight from there to dinner. not the best idea. so far we've been focusing on famine and poverty. as you may expect, these aren't topic conducive to a healthy appetite. thank god for to go boxes, i suppose.

tuesday was pretty eventful outside of class, too, actually. on the way to dinner we ran into a guy dressed like this, which i'm sure s-la will appreciate:

and i stopped him to say hi/tell him how in love with his shirt i am. (the friends i was with were mildly bemused but i think i'm training them to get used to the weird). after that came the awkward small talk phase that actually wasn't awkward because the guy told us the cutest story about how he and his friend were going to the dodgeball club game (side note: there's a dodgeball club. oh, college) and everyone was a little afraid of going now because two people who graduated last year had met at dodgeball and were now married. and then he asked us to go to dodgeball with them. which...no. i'm holding out for an accent or someone with proven culinary ability. we all know what happens when i get near a kitchen. it's a good thing there are dining halls/restaurants/takeout.

the takeout around here isn't bad, actually. i still haven't found a good thai place, yet, but we found a yummy chinese place that delivers and had a movie night in on wednesday. wednesday was basically a girls' night, actually. to begin with, the momster came to visit/drop off more things that i forgot. we walked around downtown with the lulus. i miss my evil little munchkins so much. i wish i could smuggle them into the dorm with me. they're so tiny, it's not like anyone would notice. well, not until every pair of headphones in the hall ends up in lulus evil clutches, anyway. still, we had a good time, see:

after that, we headed to the wonderfully air-conditioned library to chill in the tree houses:

while there, we discovered that one of my hall-es likes to dance while she's studying/listening to her ipod. we got the funniest video of it but i've been banned from posting it. oh, we also invented the term hall-e. it's pronounced like wall-e and it's basically the people who live on your hall. idk, it's just fun to write out. plus we had just watched wall-e (one of the other hall-es was showing it in her room and we popped in) so we sort of had it on the brain. then we had more animal fun times. first, we tried to lure a squirrel over to say hi with trash:

and later that night we saw russell the cat again:

club fair was wednesday night, too, so now i'm signed up for all sorts of interesting things. i'm excited. after club fair was the laundry party. me and six of my hall-es grabbed our laundry and met up to combine our laundry and get it all done together. our laundry room is in the basement, so it was good to have buddies down there. we ended up bringing computers and ipods and speakers and having an exercise/dance party since it took, like, two and a half hours to get everything sorted/washed/dried/folded/sorted again. oh, and in the middle of it, s-la, jenibean, and meggo were all "get on oovoo"/melodramatically asserting that i'm dead (i'm clearly not - look at me bloggling!) so i got on oovoo and talked to them/let them creep on us. it was pretty fun.

and then after that was a bout of creepiness/general hilarity that i can't blog about but am mentioning so you can remind me to text/call/skype you about it sometime. it's carried over until...now, actually (two of my neighbors, one of my roomies, and a couple of my hall-es are stalking the fourth floor while i write this), so you'll want to hear this eventually. i might get to be james(ina?) bond after all! and to think my second grade teacher told me being a super spy wasn't a viable career choice. that bwitch.

today i had three classes in a row again, so nothing too interesting happened. like i said, we took today to clean and organize and make a list of groceries to get (we're splitting breakfast and basic snacks with our neighbors so we can all have breakfast and decent coffee together early in the mornings instead of going all the way to a dining hall before class. i spent some more time studying in the tree houses with a few of my hall-es. oh, and we had a mini nail party in the lounge. there were so many pretty colors, i was a little overwhelmed. my fingers are now sherbet orange with a sparkle me silver top coat (OPI! i love my hall) and my toes are painted red hot chili pepper. after that we just chilled in my room and watched reruns of community and the office. oh, and we finally figured out the channel listings. that was exciting (well, to me, since we all know i'm a nerd). and now i'm blogging really quickly (in case you couldn't tell, i've been saving bits and pieces of this post as drafts all week long and was too lazy to finish and post it) before everyone comes back.

tomorrow i have my first revolution and cinema in iran seminar. i'm really excited for that class, in part because the kite runner is on the reading list for it and i really loved that book. wish me luck! and tell me how life has been for all of you. or get on skype. i'm sunandsilence (obviously). i need friends!

non, je ne regrette rien (a post in pictures)

fifty percent of today's title comes from the song of the same name by edith piaf, also known as the-song-that-played-during-the-kick. i've actually been playing the inception score on loop lately. it's good background music, but then again i love just about everything hans zimmer chooses to do.

part 1: fun with masks.

awww.

s-la tries on the hooker mask.
so does jenn the asian.

i get photographed trying on something...odd.
again, so does jenn the asian.
and travis just gets photographed trying on something gay.
...and something terrifying.

part 2: questionable taste in clothing

we ventured into ed hardy while waiting for s-la to stop being lost.

the store that sold the masks only seemed to carry Rings of a Certain Size.
and that size would be giant.
see what we had to work with?

part 3: someone eats twice their own body weight.

look at those plates!

part 4: goooaaaal.

real madrid vs. club america. i started capping when the game started looking interesting.

see the other tabs open in my window? yeah, stop judging me for them.

this is a shameless attempt to get you to watch club football.

or at least support the usa's bid for the 2018 world cup. sign up here.

holy roller novocaine

today's title comes from the song of the same name by kings of leon. it's (in my opinion, which is the only one that matters) one of their best songs. at the very least, there is no mention of flaming intercourse or wanting to use somebody like you. this can only be a good thing. also, even s-la likes it, and she is notoriously (again, in my opinion) picky about what she listens to. here, judge it for yourselves:

so today s-la, travis, and jennifer (who are just not cool enough to get code names, sucks for them) went shopping - primarily for travis because, as you all should know, i've been shopping more or less constantly for the last few weeks.

s has already covered this, but shopping for boys is hard. their sizes are weird! they don't have fun styles to choose from. actually, there isn't much in the way of personal style in the world of men's fashion at all. as far as i can tell there is either "well dressed" or "blegh". like, there's no middle ground. it's kind of strange. there isn't "quirky" or "bohemian" or "fancy" or "retro" or "indie" or anything. i don't understand how they deal with it!

schweini doesn't understand, either.

well, we had to cover all of tyson's and the leesburg outlets (and, of course we made it to the outlets just in time for a giant thunderstorm), but we at last managed to get the ginger one the makings of a good wardrobe. we taught him what argyle and sweater vests were! also included in today's lessons: the importance of the long-sleeved collared shirt in layering. i feel so proud, i basically did this when he started showing signs of comprehension:

i also got a few things for myself, which is always good. best of all, i went to barnes & noble! i got the bell jar (sylvia plath), the lacuna (barbara kingsolver), and the alchemist (paulo co-oh fucking hell i have no idea how to spell or pronounce his last name). after my momster-enforced round of real estate tomorrow i think i'll go on a book binge. anything to distract me from hicks and gillet, the liverpool football club owners, trying to sabotage the club's sale to a chinese billionaire. and in case the thread i linked to isn't enough to clarify the matter, we definitely want the sale to go through. the current owners have put the team into a couple hundred million pounds of debt and might do worse if they aren't stopped. and, no, this isn't a shameless ploy to get you all to start following the english premier league/support liverpool. it so is. you should all know better by now.

other things of interest...

this video made me laugh so hard. watch all the way through, okay?

oh, and in keeping with my arcade fire kick, here's my latest love from their new album:

and another song that's been stuck in my head:

anyway, i'm off to start reading/snacking. i'm feeling gouda cheese and the lacuna tonight. what do you think?

eta: in case you couldn't tell, i'm dead tired, so tomorrow i'll probably post actual details/anecdotes/pictures of our mall adventures. highlights include: masks, jennifer eating twice as much as anyone at the table, and ed hardy.

eta #2: screw books and food. real madrid vs. club america is streaming right now. later, gators.

day in the life

a quick scroll through my blog revealed a slight favoritism of one topic the best topic it's the world cup and only happens once every four years what do you expect?- in my last few posts, so i thought i'd take a break from all the soccer-spamming to actually blog about my life again.

today i...

started the day with a healthy breakfast of poptarts and milk in my room

said hi to my teddy bear shelf

laughed at my woefully un-updated bulletin board (last used circa 2008)

actually made my bed
played with my dogs (and started my epic harry potter reread)

showered and got dressed
went to the mall with sarah stücke (cool story: i totally just learned the short cut for umlauts on a mac - you hit the option button, then u, then whichever letter you want the umlaut over), where i...

bought the world's silliest bra (and a few other things, but they're in the washer so i won't picture them)

saw hannah banana in her natural workerly habitat

went to kohl's for the very first time. (here pictured: sarah stücke, obstructing the wonder of kohl's). be proud, s-la

and then i came home, where i rewatched the conferation's cup (in spanish, since univision was the only channel in the US that would show it) and...

began an epic lord of the rings marathon.

i really am that boring. now i'm off to continue my boring life with the hobbits for company.

been there, done that, messed around

today's title comes from la roux's bulletproof. it was playing in forever 21 today and got stuck in my head. again. oh well. at least it's cheerful.

in case i hadn't made it clear, i went shopping today. in comparison to the momster's haul, i didn't get too much. you should all be proud. see?

clockwise from left to right: the widow of the south, an at-home parafin spa kit, urban decay's essential shadow box, eye shadow primer potion, and the best bra of all time
audrey hepburn t-shirt dress and floral lace leggings, both from forever 21
technically the at-home parafin spa kit was one of the momster's purchases but i'm counting in my books too. mostly because i'm going to be the first one using it as soon as this blog is over.

oh, and the bra isn't just me being slightly inappropriate (come on, do i blog every time i go bra shopping? i think not. well, except for that one time with the rainbow bra, but that was an exception because...rainbows). nope. this time there's a story behind it.

you know how victoria's secret has all those mannequins scattered throughout the store? and they always wear the cutest things? well, at the fair oaks victoria's secret the first mannequin you see in the store was wearing the same bra pictured above. isn't it cute? i think so. unfortunately it was sold out in my size, so i had the momster distract the saleswoman while i...well, technically i stripped the poor, unfortunate mannequin, but it was all for a good cause giving the store money and therefore stimulating the economy and doing my little bit to get us out of this recession before i have to get a job so just...

no, really. i know it sounds bad, but at least i paid for it, okay? and so what if i didn't find another bra to put on the mannequin? that would've looked even worse. i was lucky enough that no one saw me taking the bra in the first place - trying to put one on it would've looked a bunch worse. i could've been arrested. the mall cops would've been all, "why were you doing inappropriate things to a mannequin in public?" and i would've had to be like, "i wasn't! really! see:

no, really, how is he not gay?

and it would've been awkward for everyone. oh, and i was already an hour late for jenibean's birthday party (she turned old legal eighteen today so everybody head over to her blog and say happy birthday, okay?), which then turned into two hours between the momster's pressing need for cheesecake factory and the horrible traffic in fairfax/chantilly.

anyway, while i was shopping today, i came to a surprising conclusion. it's probably going to get me a 2 on my ap econ exam, actually, but:

the average american consumer is a moron.

seriously.

this one's $12.00.

harsh words, but while in forever 21 today - a store i usually consider more sensible than urban outfitters or free people, much as i love them both - i discovered that people will willingly spend over twenty dollars on 37 holes and leftover bits of t-shirt. not even a shirt. a shirt-fetus. in nine months these might one day have emerged as fully grown t-shirt members of society, but those darn chinese factory workers got to them and aborted their little fabric-y souls before they ever had a chance.

since i just got home from jenibean's birthday party (where, s-la, meggo, and emmeline-with-no-code-name-because-she-doesn't-blog-but-don't-get-any-ideas-gina-this-can't-be-your-label-because-you-blog-and-also-it's-too-long-and-has-too-many-hyphens-oh-my-god and i decorated her room in a manner which i, personally and redundantly, think deserves a blog post. a gentle hint, bean), i'm going to finish this post up with two things. never mind, i lied and am too lazy to hit the backspace button. it's going to be three things.

thing the first: dear lurkers - and i know you exist, sitting at your keyboards and being all lurker-y - did you know that you can comment anonymously? really, you can. just hit the little comment button at the top of the post and say something so i know i'm not hallucinating you. thanks.

thing the second. more la roux:

thing the third. the very best birthday song:

watch the last wall collapse

today's title comes from matt nathanson's sooner surrender. it's such a cute song, go listen to it.

i've been absent for blogging lately. surprisingly this was caused by neither surprise illness or a sudden binge of tv-watching (although i am watching the daily show right now. i love sesame street michael steele). nope, i've just been too lazy or silly to blog.

you see, as a result of the momster only having to pay around $2000 for college, life has been very, very good lately. and by 'good' i mean that she's been dropping me off at fair oaks after school with a credit and a commandment to play. which i have. among other things i bought a ton of books - i just finished reading elizabeth kostova's the historian, more on that later - and clothes and sandals. mostly, though, i spent my money on makeup.

here's my favorites:

clockwise, from top: smashbox camera-ready concealer, guerlain insolence primer, makeup forever mat velvet foundation, estee lauder nail polish in pink champagne, smashbox lash plumper mascara, urban decay eyeliner in zero, sephora eyeshadow in milestone and mad for macaroons, and urban decay eyeshadow in baked

i'm pretty happy with my haul. the weather lately has been making me really want more bronze- and gold-toned makeup. plus i had the people at MAC and sephora do my makeup and pick my foundation, which saved me a lot of indecisive "does this one or this one match me better" wavering in front of the mirror.

i had a few other adventures at the mall, but i'll save them for another day. i know, i know. cop out. but i'm tired - stupid calc homework/flashcards. they took so long last night. it wasn't even hard - i just had no idea what to include on the cards since the descriptions were so vague. ugh, i don't even understand why we still have to go to school. can't we just graduate already? there's still another quarter to go.

anyway, there's one more joyous piece of news i wanted to share with you. i'm going to get fat! and i don't even mind. this is why:

yep, those are panera sandwiches. and salads. and soup and green tea. not pictured are the giant baskets of bread and pastries and cookies from them that are filling up our kitchen.

it's all the momster's fault. once a month her real estate firm does like a conference-type thing and panera caters it. but since they're all talking business no one ever eats anything and the people in her office split up the food. yep, that's right - all of that's a fraction of the original mountain of food. nevertheless, we won't be able to grocery shop - well, for anything besides ice cream/freezer food and dry goods - for a week. it's going to take forever to eat all of this. i'll try anyway. and by try, i mean that i'll open my fridge and do this:

Photobucket

now, just a quick note on the historian, which i mentioned earlier in this post. it's awesome. it's great to read a fun book that's actually well-written. it's wonderful to find an entertaining book that's better written than, say, the average dan brown novel. i guess i'm really just happy to read something about vampires that are actually scary. Comrade S-la, i hope you've inferred from this paragraph that this is going to be the latest addition to the communist book collective.

this is the song that i stole the title of this post from. listen to it, it's pretty:

and here's the song that i'm listening to now:

ask your friends

so today i went to the mall. i got a little christmas shopping done. got a little rachel shopping done (no shoes, sadly, although you can see a few of my favorite goodies above). it kind of made up for the fact that i still haven't slept since tuesday night (woo hoo all nighters for lit essays!) and had to sit through the most boring, repetitive physics class ever today. calc and lit were kind of awful too. they were just so boring. it was all 'review this' and 'work silently' and 'don't collaborate on your loved one projects'. eurgh.

luckily, my day started to look up during early release when sarah and i went on pandora to listen to music and i mentioned that cartel's new single had been coke's open happiness free download of the week last week. some kid we'd never seen before started talking to us about cartel and then the beatles and sarah's inexplicable love of warren zevon and other random bands and introduced us to the pretty lights. if you click the link it'll take you to their official website where - get this - all their music is available as free downloads. all of it. free. honestly, between this and empires and s-la's christmas song of happiness i'm just drowning in free music this week. (it hasn't quieted my hopes that random library/early release kid will turn out to be my One Friend Of Indie Music Hookups)

i'm actually listening to the pretty lights right now. they're kind of techno. slow, though. i don't know how to describe it, really, just that they've got a lot of synth and syncopation and their really ambient and some of their songs are just perfect as background music and some of them have just made me want to get up and dance or run on the treadmill. so whatever genre they are, that's it. seriously, go check them out.

hmm, i think i'm going to have some oreos and milk and go to sleep...at like 6. no, wait, that's just too pathetic. so let's revise that to 'i think i'll have some cookies and milk all santa-like and resolutely stay awake until a more respectable hour like 8:30". yes, that seems much better, doesn't it?

also, gina wrote a poem! go look at it.
